Looking for the top air purifier for allergies and asthma in 2023? I’ll share my favorite HEPA purifiers for dust mites, mold, and pet allergies.
An air purifier can be a valuable resource for someone suffering from dust mite allergy. 9 years ago I was diagnosed with dust mite allergy and immediately began looking for the top purifiers for allergies (especially dust mites).
In hindsight, I encountered some problems with air purifiers. Many products claimed to “clean air” but in reality they simply blew dust and pet dander around the house, making my allergy symptoms worse.
The air purifier I purchased had a porous filter, so although it may have cleaned big particulates from the air, like lint and dog hair, it definitely wasn’t capturing micro allergens, like dust mites, pet allergies, and pollen. It actually made my allergies worse!
I’ve created this guide so you don’t make the same mistake I did. There are a few characteristics you should look for when buying a purifier for allergies and asthma.
In this article, we’ll recommend the best air purifiers for dust mites and share other tips you can use around the home to decrease dust mite and pet allergen exposure.

What Do Air Purifiers Do
The question seems self-explanatory, right? Well, not all air purifiers are the same, and the technology has come a long way in the last decade.
Early on, air purifiers were bulky and filtered air using a porous, sponge-like filter…in other words there wasn’t much of a filter and the purifiers wouldn’t do much to improve allergies.
As pollution and allergies have become a larger issue, with millions of people suffering from asthma and allergy, engineers have managed to create air purifiers for allergies and asthma that are excellent at cleaning the air. The same engineers have designed some beautiful products as well.
A typical air purifier is an electric, plug-in device, that sucks in air and pushes it through a filter. Quality air purifiers have a multi-filter process where microscopic particulates are removed from the air and recirculated throughout the room.
Although the top air purifiers are not made for pet hair and dog hair, they will help with that problem too. If you’re battling pet hair, you need to vacuum and sweep.
Air purifiers clean pet allergens (not hair) that are invisible to our eyes and float in the air. Most of the things that cause us allergy we can’t see!
They often have multiple speed settings, timers, and filter-change alerts. As you can imagine, the air that comes out of a filter should be particulate free, especially for those of us with severe allergies.
Will an Air Purifier Help with my Dust, Pollen, Mold, or Pet Allergy
Do air purifiers remove dust mites? That’s a good question. The answer is “absolutely”!
Just make sure it’s a HEPA air purifier and it will remove dust mites, pollen, mold, and pet dander. If it doesn’t say HEPA filter, then it’s doubtful that it will help improve your allergies.
An air purifier rated to work in a room 750 square feet, can reduce pollution and particulates by 95% within 2 hours. That is a lot of fresh air circulated in a short amount of time.
Obviously, the type of filter used plays a large role in how much the air purifier will help your allergies. This article only recommends the air purifiers with good filters.
As a general rule, HEPA filters capture the finest allergens while carbon activated filters capture many chemical allergens, gases, smoke, and cooking odors.
Electrostatic and Ionic Ozone filters charge particles in the air or attract them using static electricity. Electrostatic and Ionic Ozone filters are not recommended by Dust Mite Solutions unless they are paired with a HEPA filter!
How To Choose An Air Purifier for Allergies and Asthma (dust mite, mold, or pet)
HEPA Filter
High Efficiency Particulate Arrestance, or HEPA filters, are the finest filters on the market and are proven to capture allergens like pollen, dust mites, and mold. Air purifiers for pet allergies should also use a HEPA filter.
Charcoal filters
The best HEPA air purifiers use a multi-step filtration process. This means a HEPA filter then charcoal filters to effectively reduce allergens.
Charcoal filters are especially effective against odors and harsh chemicals, so if you have pets or a smoker in the home, the charcoal filter works well in combination with a HEPA filter!
UV light technology
UV light is another characteristic to look for when purchasing an air purifier. UV light is effective against bacteria and germs.
I don’t worry too much about UV light. I’m focused more on the pet, pollen, and mold allergens so I play close attention to the HEPA filter.
Speed settings
Air purifier for allergies should have multiple settings (high, medium, and low). Some air purifiers have automatic settings based on the allergy load in the air.
Quiet
Lower quality air purifiers can be noisy and be less effective than a fan, however, air purifiers for dust mites are quiet, and perfect to run at night while you are sleeping.

It works best for rooms 700 square feet so it can be placed in a common room or bedroom (I’d put it in a TV room and it should help the majority of the house). If you have a large house you’ll want to purchase a few.
The reviews on this product say nothing but good things and that’s what you’d expect from amazing customer service. In the photo (right) you can see the Rabbit Air purifier, however, the face colors can be changed and the whole device can even be fixed to a wall so it’s not on your floor.

No. 3 Dyson Pure Hot Cool Link Air Purifier with Wifi (Air Purifier for Allergies – multiple colors)
The Dyson brand has come a long way since its inception. When it came onto the vacuum market it revolutionized the industry with its “bagless” vacuums.
Then, it invested heavily in battery technology to produce the strongest battery for cordless vacuums. As the company has expanded with brand and reputation, they’ve filled voids in other industries as well.
Just yesterday I saw a hairdryer advertisement from Dyson!
Highlights:
- HEPA filtration
- Carbon filtration
- Alexa compatible (and wifi)
- Multiple colors and styles
- Auto-settings
- Cool and Heat
- Quiet
- Great for allergies and asthma
Let’s talk about Dyson’s beautiful HEPA air purifiers. Our favorite is the Dyson Pure Hot Cool link and it ranks highly in our review. The first thing you can’t help but notice is the appearance – it is stunning.
It’s not a device you want to hide behind a table or couch, rather, you might want it on the table to show off. Dyson did well with the appearance, but what the company is really known for is performance.
The allergy air purifier is meant to run year-round. But what should you do if you don’t want cool air on you during the winter? Just switch on the heat option. What separates this air purifier from others is it gives off heat or cold air depending on the season.
And of course, it offers legitimate HEPA air filtration to capture pollen, dust mites, mold, bacteria, and pet dander. The additional layer of carbon filtration traps odors and organic compounds (chemicals).
>> check Dyson styles and reviews on Amazon
It will reduce your allergy and asthma symptoms and runs super-silent with an auto mode, nighttime mode, and sleep timer. It also measures the air quality in your home and displays it.
You can even use the app to schedule the heater in the morning and fan in the afternoon (works with Alexa too). There is no spinning blades or parts to constantly clean.
The air purifier measures 8.7 x 6 x 24.9 inches and weighs 8.62 lbs. You might think it’s expensive however it has a 2-year warranty. If you like Dyson’s vacuums (which are amazing), then you’ll appreciate the Dyson HEPA air purifier.

I’m breathing better and I already notice I am having to dust less frequently which is great, and that means I have to vacuum less frequently too. We have a lot of pet in our homes and this helps to capture their hair as well. I’m thinking of purchasing another one for other rooms in the house.” – GermGuardian customer

We decided to get this filter because we were looking for a solution and thought an air purifier would help. The 2000 with HEPA is great for our family room and living area. We run it all day and within the first 2 days of using it we stopped coughing. It really cleans your indoor air. No comparison to older air purifiers that didn’t live up to the hype.” – Philips Air Purifier customer
The Philips Air Purifier 2000 is a large room option for families suffering from dust mite allergy. It comes in two options, including a wifi-enabled air purifier linked to a smartphone application that shows real-time analysis of indoor and outdoor allergen levels as well as tracking.

The HEPA filter does need to be changed 1x every 12 months and the active carbon filter 1x every 6 months. The HEPA filter will take care of all your mold, pollen, pet, and dust mite allergies while the active carbon filter will reduce smells and harsh chemicals.
We believe this is one of the best HEPA air purifiers on the market for the whole house.
This is a smooth operating product made by a reputable company. You can rest assured you’ll be breathing pure air, not dust or pollution.
No. 6 Honeywell 17000-S QuietCare True HEPA Air Purifier (small space 200 sq ft)
“My allergies are bad, really bad. Dust mites and pollen destroy me and make me feel ill. I did my research and settled on the Honeywell 170000 QuietCare because it has a HEPA filter. I am not disappointed by the purchase. Currently, I have multiple air purifiers from Honeywell and have purchased for family members who also have allergies. I breathe better, sleep better, and my overall quality of life has improved. My sinuses are much better and reduced my symptoms a lot. It will literally clean your room of pollution and you’ll be amazing at how much dust is in your home.” – Honeywell 17000 customer
The Honeywell company has been around since 1885. They are one of America’s oldest companies with a great reputation. QuietCare is our top small space air purifier for allergies. It would be perfect for a bedroom! The Honeywell air purifier uses a HEPA filter to capture 99.97% of common household airborne pollutants.
The HEPA filter can be vacuumed then reused – great for limiting filter costs! QuietCare has 3 speeds to choose from and an indicator light that shows the speed and filter.
Measurements of the product are 16 inches x 13 in. x 17in. and weighs approximately 11.5 pounds. A 5-year limited warranty protects against any problems you might encounter early on.

There are even photos showing the dust captured from the air. Other commenters say how it reduces “smoke in the room and makes the air cleaner”.
Honeywell is a well-respected American company and we recommend this Honeywell air purifier (other models too). Keep in mind that it is for smaller areas like bedrooms and it has a reasonable price point compared to other good-quality dust mite air purifiers.
No. 7 Hamilton Beach TrueAir Ultra Quiet Air Purifiers (Permanent HEPA Air Purifier for Allergies)
“These are smaller air purifiers that work well. We bought 2 of these mainly for dust. It has cleaned up our home, kinda like a vacuum but just sucks in your air. We add a Honeywell charcoal filter and put it over the HEPA filter. This allows us to change the HEPA less frequently and the charcoal filter more often (3 months). A charcoal filter has added benefit with odor, smoke, and chemical sensitivities. After some time, the filters are filthy which is great right?! It works and we use the 24 hours a day. Its been a good investment for our health!” – Hamilton Beach Air Purifier customer
The Hamilton Beach TrueAir Allergen Purifier is a hard-working, durable product. You might be familiar with the Hamilton Beach brand for blenders, electric kettles, coffee makers among others.
This is another awesome purifier for allergies (dust mites and pets) and great for people on a budget. It measures 10.8 x 8.1 x 16.4 inches and weighs 6.3 lbs.

Highlights:
- Works best in rooms up to 160 square feet
- Permanent HEPA grade filter you can vacuum
- Tower design in white color
- 3-speed settings
- 2 replaceable zeolite filters for pet odors
- 1 year limited warranty
Similar to other air purifiers we reviewed, this Hamilton Beach Air Purifier uses a 3 step filtration process. First, the permanent pre-filter traps larger particles like hair.
Next, the 2 replaceable zeolite filters capture odors from chemicals, pets, and dander.
Third, the permanent HEPA filter captures the finest allergy-causing particles like dust mites, pollen, and mold.
>> check Hamilton Beach details and reviews on Amazon
Hamilton Beach air purifier differs from many air purifiers because the HEPA filter is permanent; this saves money! However, the carbon zeolite filters should be changed every 3 months (in the quoted review above, the family uses the Honeywell charcoal pre-filter and says they work well).
As mentioned above, this air purifier works best in a smaller room (160 square feet). Bedroom and offices are ideal. At this price point, you could also purchase a few of these for every room in the house.
With almost 2,000 reviews on amazon.com and 4.2 out of 5 stars, this air purifier must be working because people are satisfied with the product. Dust Mite Solutions recommends this product.
No. 8 Levoit Air Purifier Filtration with True HEPA Filter – Odor and Allergen (Air Purifier for Asthma)
“I’m using this for my son’s room who was just diagnosed with allergies. The Levoit 3 in 1 air purifier works well compared to other air purifiers I’ve tried in the past and the fact that it has a HEPA filter is a huge plus. Installation is easy, straightforward and I put it on my nightstand to keep the intake off the ground. Has multiple speeds and good air flow. Not too noisy, I think it helps my son sleep. The carbon filter is for chemicals and odors is a great second filter – can’t help but give Levoit a great review” – Levoit Air Purifier review
Highlights:
- Compact, bedroom/office size
- 3 in 1 air purifier (multi-stage)
- 1 HEPA filter, 1 preliminary filter, 1 HEPA activated carbon filter
- Nightlight and quiet
- 2-year warranty and lifetime support
- Cylinder design, stylish
The Levoit Air Purifier is another great air purifier for asthma and allergies. It offers a high-quality filtering system in a modern, compact design.
This product works best for an office or bedroom rather than a whole house and fits nicely on a nightstand or dresser. It doesn’t just filter one thing (allergens for example) rather, Levoit uses a 3 in 1 filtrations process to capture smells and bacteria.
>> check Levoit options and reviews on Amazon
The filters are excellent for people with dust mite or pet allergies and filters 99.7% percent of dust, pollen, smoke, odors, mold spores, and pet dander. The particles size captured is as small as .3 microns and captures pollution at a PM 2.5 rate.
The compact Levoit air purifier is a great option for a baby’s room, allergic adult, or at the office in the city.
Based on our Levoit air purifier review, we recommend the product, but other reviews rate it as their #1 pick for air purifiers (small space). Additional convenient features are its 3-speed settings, nightlight (2 brightness settings) and 2-year warranty so you can purchase with confidence.
Please note: the HEPA filter should be replaced every 6 months (filter model: LV-H132-RF).

No. 9 GermGuardian AC4100 3-1 HEPA Air Purifier
GermGuardian is on our list twice and for good reason. They make a solid air purifier. The first option we mentioned was their larger model that’s great for small homes or big rooms. This option is the company’s smaller model, perfect for a bedroom or office, and fits nicely on a table.
Highlights:
- 3 in 1 technology – HEPA, Carbon, and UV
- For allergens, smoke, odors, mold, dust, germs, and pets
- 11 inches tall
- 3 speeds
- Black in color
- Great for small spaces
- 4.85 lbs
- 7.5 x 6.4 x 10.4 inches
What I like about GermGuardian’s air purifier is that you can’t really tell it’s an air purifier. If you were to see it on a counter or shelf it looks like a small speaker or stereo.
The design is boxy but looks great and it can run silently in an office or bedroom virtually unnoticed.
>> check GermGuardian on Amazon
Customers mention that the size and style of the air purifier is perfect for small rooms. They also say it works! There are a ton of photos showing how it works after just a short period of time (few weeks to a month).
Also, many people with allergies and pet allergies are confident the product is helping them, their family, and pets breathe better. We like this little guy!
How Long Should I Keep My Air Purifier On
For new air purifiers, it’s important to turn the filter on a high setting and let run for a few hours, this will circulate air quickly and more importantly allow the motor and filter to adjust to working in your home environment/climate. Within a few hours, these air purifiers will clean the air of a single room thoroughly (up to 95%).
After the air purifier has been on a high setting for a few hours, most of the air has been cleaned. Therefore, we recommend lowing the fan speed to low or medium. Do not be worried about over-use, as air purifiers are made to run 24 hours a day.
In fact, we also recommend leaving your air purifier on constantly. For some people, the humming sound of the air purifier acts as a white noise and aides in sleep. For others, it may take a few days to get comfortable with the humming.
It is important to check the air purifier’s HEPA filter and clean or replace it routinely. Check the manual for your specific air purifier to know when to change the filter. Most air purifiers have indicator lights that will alert you when to change.
You’ll also want to check the intake area for debris. Dog hair and cat hair is not meant to go inside a HEPA air purifier, they can clog the air vent.
The best air purifiers are only meant to capture the smallest airborne particulates and not the large things we can see. If you’re looking for something to clean dirt and pet hair a HEPA air purifier is not the answer.
Cleaning is the answer so sweep or vacuum!

Where Should I Put My Air Purifier
It depends on how many air purifiers you are using and the size of your home.
For large homes, the most valuable place to have an air purifier is the bedroom. It can work magic for allergies and odors in a small bedroom within a few hours. Since we spend so much time in our rooms sleeping, pay close attention to bedroom air.
If you have a small home or purchase a larger air purifier, the family room/tv room might be a preferred location. There, the filter can work to reach a greater area of the home and clean air from the doorways, windows, and kitchen.
Once you decide on a room for the air purifier, find a place where the unit’s air intake won’t be blocked. Alen Air Purifier Company advises “do not block the air intake or exit vents” and “keep your unit at least 1 foot away from walls or furniture”.
Doing so will allow air to circulate around the room in a more effective way. Allowing units to blow upwards toward the ceiling is best, so don’t place under a desk or shelf.

Consider a Filtrete HVAC Filter As Well
Let’s also mention another way to reduce allergens within the home. For those of us who have heating and air conditioning in the home, we often overlook the HVAC system.
Growing up, my family used the cheapest filters on the market. They did their job in keeping out big particulates in the air, but they didn’t stop dust mites or other common allergens like pollen, mold, or animal dander.
As a result, my allergies became worse because the HVAC was blowing around tiny allergens.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, indoor air can be up to 2-5 times more polluted than outdoor air. Because of the high risk of asthma and allergies, it’s important we take action to protect ourselves and our family.
Filtrete is the leading company, offering the best HVAC filters and offer a wide variety of filters for the home. Their allergen-reducing filters are wonderful and can significantly improve indoor air quality.
We did a Filtrete comparison in one of our earlier blog posts. Check out our review for the best HVAC filters here!
Conclusion
Understanding the important components of an air purifier will help us chose the best air purifier for allergies and reduce our symptoms. I grew up with allergy symptoms and had itchy eyes and ears, stuffy nose, and rashes on my skin.
It took me a long time to realize that invisible allergens were causing my symptoms, but once I was allergy tested I knew I could overcome them.
With help from my allergist, I made a number of adjustments inside my home, including using mattress and pillow covers, getting rid of carpets, using allergy HVAC filters, and buying the best HEPA air purifier for allergies.
Early on, I didn’t understand the importance of a HEPA filter or an HVAC filter. As I’ve learned more about my allergies I’ve learned what to look for in allergy-reducing products.
An air purifier without a HEPA filter will do little to improve your home’s air quality. However, an air purifier with HEPA filter will purifier your air almost 100%. Below are the options we covered in this article.
The following are the best HEPA air purifier for dust, mold, and pet allergies:
- Rabbit Air – MinusA2 HEPA Air Purifier
- Alen BreatheSmart FLEX Customizable Air Purifier with HEP-Pure Filter to Remove Allergies and Dust

Maybe you experience your worst allergy symptoms at your workplace. If you’ve got your own office the smaller air purifiers will work great. If you’re a school teacher you could add one to your classroom – not only will it help you, but also your students!
Dust Mite Solutions recommends taking multiple steps to further improve the air quality within your home. There are a lot of simple things you can do (regular cleaning and dusting are easy) which will further improve your allergies.
With a few adjustments, you can overcome your allergies and allergy symptoms.
