Dust mites, also known as bed mites, can supposedly be controlled with an anti-dust mite ultrasonic device, or through a multi-step process that involves a routine of minimizing clutter, weekly cleaning, and proper temperature regulation.
I’ll also share a number of other ways you can control dust mites in your home. Let’s get started!
The Ultrasonic Dust Mite Repeller/Controller
The Anti-Dust Mite Ultrasonic Controller is a newer product on the market to control dust mites. Its method works by using ultrasonic waves and UV light to repel dust mites.
These sounds are undetectable to humans or animals, yet disrupt the reproduction cycle of dust mites. It plugs into your wall outlet and is recommended for use in rooms.
The concept, however, has been around for decades. They are marketed for spiders around windows and cockroaches near doorways, but they’re getting more and more attention to fight dust mites.
Currently, there are two dust mite controllers listed on Amazon. The 1st product is the DTM Care Controller. It is marketed for average room sizes and connects to an AC outlet.
The 2nd product is the 110v Ultrasonic Dust Mite Controller sold by BV Medical. It is slightly less expensive than the DTM Controller and is a similar size.
Both dust mite controllers can be plugged into a wall outlet. They use minimal electricity and emit a sound that isn’t audible to the human ear.
Do Ultrasonic Dust Mite Controllers Work?
There are similar products that are said to be effective against other arachnids. For example, many companies offer spider control using an electromagnetic field. Growing up I saw many of these devices in friends homes.
The product emitted ultrasonic/electronic waves in the room which are said to be undesirable to pests. The feedback I heard from friends was positive for other arachnids, so why wouldn’t it work for dust mites too?
During my search for research, I found very little to support or deny ultrasonic dust mite controllers. If I was strongly suffering from dust mite allergy I would give any device a try.
In addition to electronic dust mite controllers, there are a number of options to manage dust mites in the household and reduce their populations. Below, I mention the strategies that worked best for my allergies and worked well as “dust mite controller”.
Dust Mite Controllers Work, But What Else Can I Do?
Routine Cleaning
- Vacuum,
- Sweep or Mop Floors Weekly
- Shake Out Rugs
Carpets and rugs are the biggest challenges when it comes to reducing dust mite populations in the home. If removing carpets and rugs aren’t an option, weekly vacuuming is necessary.
Make sure you use a special vacuum for dust mite allergy and pet allergy with a HEPA filter.
HEPA filters trap extra-fine particulates like dust mites, pollen, and animal dander. If your home has tile, linoleum, or wood flooring, dust mite control is much easier as dust mites will have a hard time surviving on a bare floor.

Weekly Washing
- Wash Bedding with Anti Allergen Laundry Detergent
- Clothes,
- Curtains, and
- Stuffed Animals on a Weekly Basis
- Use Essential Oils!
To reduce dust mites its imperative you address your bedding. The bed is dust mites’ favorite home.
Use dust mite covers to protect you and your mattress from infestation. There are mattress, pillow, and comforter covers available that will keep dust mites from coming into contact with you.
Because of the fabric material, curtains, clothes, and stuffed animals should routinely be washed in hot water and preferably with a touch of essential oil. Adding essential oil to the washing detergent will ensure you kill dust mites.
As a bonus, it will make your clothes, curtains, and stuffed animals smell organically fresh!
Minimize Clutter

- Throw Out Stuffed Animals
- Say Adios to Carpets and Rugs
- And Reduce Pet Presence Indoors
Dust mites will meander where ever dust is. If you have clutter, such as unused books, old or unloved teddy bears, and carpets or rugs, consider throwing them out.
Keep tables clear and shelves clean.
In doing so, you’ll find less clutter makes living more enjoyable! Also, its hard to admit but animals that live indoors produce a lot of tasty food for dust mites.
Reducing pet presence indoors will improve your household hygiene.
Temperature Regulation

Cool and Dry Temperatures are BestOne of the reasons dust mites love our beds is because of the humidity. Dust mites don’t drink water, rather they have the ability to absorb moisture from the air.
As a result, dust mites are less common in high elevation, dry environments (very little moisture in the air).
If you happen to live in a humid environment consider purchasing a dehumidifier. Dehumidifiers collect excess moisture from the air. For example, my sister lives in Washington DC and has warm, humid summers.
Throughout the summer she collects 1 liter of water from her basement dehumidifier every day! Take away the humidity, and you make it harder for dust mites to survive.
HVAC filters are one of the most overlooked ways to control dust mites. Quality filters, such as 3M’s Filtrete Filters offer maximum protection from things like dust mites, pollen, dander, smoke, and other pollutants.
Most people simply buy the cheapest filters for their home. This is a big mistake since cheap filters hardly do anything!

The research behind dust mite controllers seems to be lacking, however, many people believe their use it worth a shot.
The best dust mite controller is actually a multi-step process that cleans, declutters, washes, and controls moisture levels in your home. Ultrasonic dust mite repellers can be a part of the solution but shouldn’t be the only thing you try.
Dust mite controller that using ultrasonic and electronic sound waves can be a good experiment for serious dust mite problems.
As a dust mite allergy sufferer myself, I’ve benefited greatly from using more conventional solutions like HEPA vacuums, mattress and pillow covers, air purifiers, and high-quality Filtrete allergen filters.
Luckily I was also able to get rid of my carpeting, which helped my home become less hospitable to dust mites.
The process to improve dust mite allergy takes time, but with these changes, I can assure that your dust mite allergy will improve!
